Bird of Paradise ‘Mandela’s Gold’
Bird of Paradise ‘Mandela’s Gold’ is named in honor of Nelson Mandela. The Bird of Paradise on the whole is considered a very exotic plant, and sought after by collectors & connoisseurs. The plant grows to 6 ft tall, with large, strong evergreen leaves. The flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. The flowers, which emerge one at a time from the spathe, consist of 3 brilliant yellow sepals and 3 bright blue petals. When the birds sit to have a drink of nectar, the petals open to cover their feet with pollen. The blooms make very long lasting cut flowers. Bird of Paradise is very popular as an ornamental plant. It is a low-maintenance plant that is easy to grow in the garden; it is fairly tolerant of soil conditions and needs little water once established. If cared for well, they will flower several times in a year. They do well in full sun to semi-shade.
